Last night we cooked our first meal in our new kitchen.
It was a cold night and we wanted something hearty and delicious. So we made an old favourite: Chicken pie.
If you haven’t made this before it is incredibly fail proof and so addictive. For ages I thought the supermarkets in Germany didn’t sell premade frozen pastry sheets. Then one day I realised they did and I just hadn’t known the proper German name! (Blätterteig)

  • 1 large carrot
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 leek
  • 1 capsicum (any colour)
  • 4 or 5 white button mushrooms
  • 1 stick of celery
  • Sheets of pastry
  • 2 small chicken breasts
  • 1 packet of powder chicken or mushroom soup
  • 1 clove of finely chopped garlic.

Chop all of your vegetables and dice the chicken. Melt some butter in a pan, add the finely chopped garlic. This will fill your kitchen with a potently delicious garlic smell. Add the chicken and cook until lightly brown. Add the leek and sauté with the chicken until soft. Add the remaining vegetables and stir fry for a few minutes. Add the packet soup mixed with a cup of water. This will quickly turn into a thick gravy mixture. Allow the filling to cool and line your baking dish with the pastry sheets. Fill the baking dish with the chicken mixture and fold the pastry sheets over into a secure little pocket finally placing a pastry top sheet.

Place the pie in the oven at 180°celsius for about 25 minutes or until the pastry is brown. I like to serve this with some broccoli on the side.
